The Warrior baseball team (2-4 Overall, 2-2 UIC) traveled to West Union Thursday to take on the North Fayette Valley TigerHawks (0-7 overall, 0-6 UIC) in an Upper Iowa Conference game.
At the top of the first inning, the Warriors took a 2-0 lead over the TigerHawks. Over the next two innings, the only run of the game was scored by South Winn at the top of the second inning.
At the top of the fourth inning, the Warriors extended their lead by three runs, giving them a six-run lead. However, at the bottom half of the inning, North Fayette Valley tied the game a six each.
At the top of the fifth inning, South Winn retook the lead after scoring a single run. In the sixth inning, the Warriors extended their lead from one to three, but the game was still close.
In the seventh inning of the game, South Winn put up five runs. Meanwhile, North Fayette Valley was held scoreless in the seventh inning, resulting in an eight-run victory for the Warriors, 15-7.
For North Fayette Valley, the team was led by senior first baseman Kenny Kerr, who had two hits, including a double, and a run batted in. Senior pitcher Nick Hines threw eight strikeouts from the mound.
The statistical leaders for South Winn were second baseman Sid Hesse, who is an 8th grader, and junior pitcher Braiden Todd. Hesse had a massive game, putting up four hits and three runs batted in. Todd, who started the game at catcher, was credited with the victory after throwing six strikeouts and allowing just a single run across four innings.
