CEDAR FLLS – On Monday, October 14th, Sarah Corkery, the Democratic candidate in Iowa’s 2nd congressional district, faced opponent Ashley Hinson during their first and only debate ahead of the November 5th election.
“I’m so happy that voters got to see us side by side, the difference could not have been more clear,†Corkery said.
One topic discussed was the Life at Conception Act, a bill in Congress that aims to outlaw abortion in all 50 states with no exceptions for rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. Hinson is a cosponsor of the bill but when pressed about the issue said she may vote no on it, seemingly switching her position despite adding her signature.
Corkery’s position was unchanged, insisting that all medical decisions, including reproductive healthcare, should be between a person and their doctor.
Another highlight of the debate was a discussion of immigration. Corkery said there should be more border patrol agents and that presidents should have more authority to close the border, but that immigrants are necessary for the economy.
“If we all of a sudden deported everybody, the price of milk would go from $2 to $10,†Corkery said. “We would see massive increases in our costs because we rely on people to do a job.â€
After the debate Corkery spoke with reporters and answered questions. Hinson did not.
With under 20 days until the November 5th election both candidates continue to pound the campaign trails hoping to sway voters.
