CRESCO — Sara Mead qualified for the Class 2A state meet in four events and the boys distance crew led the way as the J-Hawk girls were runner-up with 117 points and the boys placed sixth Thursday at the Crestwood State Qualifier during an extremely windy meet.

“I was extremely happy with how all of the girls performed on Thursday in the high winds,†J-Hawk girls coach Miah Smith said. “Our times were similar to our bests of the season, which tells me these girls really wanted to compete to the best of their abilities.

Smith praised most of her state-bound group.

“Sara Mead has had a spectacular season … she qualified all four of her events, including three relays which she anchored to victories. Olivia Nesbit chose a bad night to be a lefty in the discus ring, but her consistency throughout the season allowed her to get a mark that qualified her at-large.

“Amaya Trebon-Boyd advocated to run the 400 a few meets back, and it worked out well as she won Thursday and helped with the 4x4 and sprint medley qualification. Katelyn Zelle deserves a shout out because she qualified her two relays, and was barely third in her two individual events. It is tough to see that in her senior season, but I cannot wait to see what she does in the shuttle (hurdle) and sprint medley at state.â€

The boys will send distance stalwarts Will Nesbit, Karsten Nuehring and Nathan Pint in individual events and as part of the 3,200 and distance medley relays.

“For us, the meet had a lot of 50/50 shots to go to state. We ran our best and half of our 50/50 made it, so the odds played out,†head coach Jason Sullivan said. “I’m proud of the effort the guys put forward; we ran our best times of the year, and as coaches, that’s all we can ask.

“Great effort and leadership by our seniors: Cameron Davis, Paxton McHone, Karsten Nuehring, Brennan Ochsner, Nathan Pint, Jude Sullivan, Ryan Treptow, Parker Woodward, and Preston Youngblut. All the seniors competed well and showed the underclassmen how to bring (their) best.â€
