The high school football postseason is in full swing. Friday is the second round of the Class A playoffs and will see the Maquoketa Valley Wildcats (7-2) travel to Fairbank to take on the unbeaten Wapsie Valley Warriors on their home turf. Here is a quick look at both teams and what they accomplished to reach this point.
First round playoff game
(6-2) Maquoketa Valley 43
(6-2) Danville 0
The Wildcats shut out Danville on their home field, holding the Bears to just 206 yards of total offense and scoring two touchdowns from interceptions.
(3-5) Starmont 3
(8-0) Wapsie Valley 50
Wapsie Valley senior running back Hunter Curley racked up 240 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns. The Warriors Caleb Hogan threw for two touchdowns on 70 yards in total passing. Wapsie Valley picked off the Stars twice, one being a pick-six.
Previous meeting
The 4-0 Warriors traveled to Delhi on September 26th for a regular season district game. The Wildcats were 3-1 at that point, having lost to North Linn in Week 2. Wapsie Valley won the game, but it was their closest contest of the season. The Warriors had two big plays in the first half: a 64-yard TD pass to Landon Moulds and a 91-yard touchdown run by Curley. At halftime it was a one possession game with the Wildcats down 13-6. A Wapsie Valley defensive stop inside the five-yard line on fourth down kept Maquoketa Valley from going into the break with either a tie or one-point lead. Another key factor came in the third quarter when the Wildcats had to settle for a field goal after a 69-yard run by Rogan Heidt put them inside the 10-yard line. This was a four-point game with less than five minutes to play. Wapsie Valley’s big plays and the offensive line opening holes for Curley made the difference in the 27-16 Warrior win. Curley finished the game with 286 yards in rushing and three touchdowns. Heidt finished with 212 yards for the Wildcats and one touchdown. Wapsie Valley quarterback Hogan had 97-yards passing while Maquoketa Valley’s quarterback Trevor Grimm finished with 186-yards in the air.

Coaches’ comments
Maquoketa Valley – Second-year head coach Andrew Christensen: “With it being a rematch, I think the biggest thing we are trying to do is fix the fixable things from the first matchup. Obviously, we need to be able to slow down the run better than the first time, but that is easier said than done. The other thing we need to be able to do is execute consistently on offense, not get behind the chains, and finish when we get into the redzone.â€
Wapsie Valley – Fifth-year head coach Duane Foster: “Maquoketa Valley is a tough opponent. They have a diverse offense and a physical defense. They are a senior-led team that have a lot of experience and have won a lot of games. We are excited for the challenge. We will have to play well to be victorious. Our guys are up for the challenge and excited for Friday night.â€
