Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 29-year-old Jordan Schaller of Decorah on Monday afternoon, charging him with three felonies and a serious misdemeanor after he discharged a shotgun in the presence of law enforcement.

According to the WCSO, deputies responded to a residence on Ranch Road to check the welfare on Schaller after he made concerning comments to a friend.

When the deputy arrived on scene, he spoke with Schaller’s father, who advised he was not at the residence. A few moments later, Schaller appeared armed with a 20-gauge shotgun walking across the lawn toward the deputy.

After the deputy issued several demands to drop the weapon, Schaller discharged the gun several times into the ground and refused to comply with the deputy’s commands.

Additional deputies arrived on scene to assist and K-9 Drago was released on Schaller. K-9 Drago engaged Schaller by biting the shotgun out of his hand and disarming him before safely bringing the loaded shotgun back to deputies. The situation was resolved without any further incident or injury to any of the parties.

Schaller was arrested and transported to the Winneshiek County Jail where he was charged with felony assault on a peace officer (use/display of a firearm), felony intimidation with a dangerous weapon, felony assault while participating in a felony, and serious misdemeanor harassment (2nd degree).

After his arrest, search warrants were obtained and executed as a part of the follow up investigation. The case remains under investigation with additional charges pending.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Decorah Police Department, Winneshiek County Emergency Management, and the Winneshiek County Attorney’s Office.

On Tuesday morning, Schaller had his initial appearance before Magistrate Moonen and was held on a $21,500 cash bond.
