The West Union City Council was updated and reviewed the upcoming North Pine Street bridge and resurfacing project Monday.

Civil engineer Andy Goedken of Origin Design reported it is now believed the earliest bid letting for the bridge project will be June 2026, with construction anticipated in spring 2027.

Following further discussion, the council approved an amendment for final design and bidding services by Origin Design.

The amendment extends the company’s services from the submittal of preliminary plans, as covered by the original agreement, to submittal of final plans and assistance through bidding. This would include such items as answering bid questions and coordinating the project with the Iowa Department of Transportation.

The amount of the fee for the covered by the amendment is $105,550.

In addition, the council approved a 28E agreement and approval of a cost estimate totaling approximately $181,225 with the Fayette County Secondary Road Department for resurfacing of North Pine Street. As part of the agreement, the city will be charged zero interest over five years.

Later, the council approved scheduling a public hearing for Monday, June 2, to consider a fiscal year 2024-25 budget amendment.

The changes are needed due to an increase in revenues from receipts of the general obligation bond for the Linden Street/downtown sidewalks, interest received, airport fuel revenue, and police department grant funding received.

Additionally, there was an increase to expenditures for purchasing new police department tasers, ash tree removal throughout the community, insurance costs, the alley asphalt project, well and pump repairs, and trail, cemetery and airport expenses.

In other business, the council:

• Was reminded the candidate nomination filing period for the Nov. 4, 2025, city council and school board elections is from Monday, Aug. 25-Thursday, Sept. 18. The seats of Mayor Cam Granger and councilmembers Chris DeBack and Matt McElree are up for re-election.

• Approved trail map kiosk design and placement at the city parking lot, located at the corner of South Walnut and East Elm streets in West Union.

• Approved written employee reimbursement policy for coats and boots, and reimbursement to West Union Street Superintendent Lane Johansen for boots purchased.
