VINTON — Vinton Cub Scout Pack 47 held a Pinewood Derby on March 22 in the VSHS cafeteria. 16 Racers competed in the challenge, with Oliver Conklin as this year’s winner.
Since the Vinton Kiwanis Club charters the local cub scout chapter, some Kiwanis members attended the race, including: Craig Ollinger, Nick Borgwardt, and John Yundt.
“It was indeed an honor to be a part of this event,” Yundt said.
Kiwanis members Dan and Chelsea Peoples also serve as adult leaders for Pack 47.
“Thanks so much to our Kiwanians who made it to the pinewood derby this year. The scouts had a blast, and it was fun to have their help on the judging panel,” Chelsea said. “It’s a fun time with lots of opportunities for learning, like: how to cheer on your friends; how to be a good winner/loser; how to use tools; and how to make a plan for your car’s design and then complete it.”
Cub Scout Pack 47 will hold a yard flag fundraiser again this year, in an effort to remember, honor and connect local veterans. They are giving folks a chance to “send flags and show love to our community.” They are encouraging folks to flag a family member, friend, neighbor or veteran’s yard on upcoming holidays. On Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor day, and Veterans day, Cub Scouts will place 21 Flags in the yard requested. Scouts will remove the flags 2-3 days later.
If interested, please email Pack47flags@gmail.com with the donor’s name and phone number, the flag recipient and address. An $80.00 check can be mailed to Pack 47 at 5690 26th avenue Drive, Vinton, Ia 52349. Please include “Attention: Pack Fundraiser” on the envelope.
“If you want to sponsor a local veteran but don’t know any, please specify this and we will find a veteran to flag for you. Let’s turn Vinton red, white, and blue!” Pack 47 said.
