Husky Productions expands its reach, will do West Delaware Prom
The Oelwein High School band will travel to Orlando, Florida, over the 2019-20 winter break now that the School Board approved the trip 5-0.
High school band teacher Cory McBride said the band last took a trip to trip to Orlando during the 2015-16 winter break. The band will perform at Walt Disney World like it did in the previous trip.
“Last time it was really fun and the day we performed they actually stopped letting people in because they were over capacity,†McBride said. “I think we performed in front of a 100,000 people. It was really exciting. It’s a little bigger than the Oelwein parades.â€
The trip will also include a trip to the ocean and to the Kennedy Space Center. The band has been fundraising to help pay for next year’s trip.
Husky Productions update
McBride also gave the school board an update on Husky Productions, a student-led group he oversees.
“The kids are really hands-on with that,†McBride said. “We do a lot of audio and lighting technology. Last night, we helped out with the Williams Center concert. Pretty much all of the lighting was us.â€
The concert McBride is referring to is the “Rock This Town Orchestra Christmas Spectacular: A Tribute to Brian Setzer Orchestra,†which took place on Sunday evening.
“I helped out a little bit, but we had a student that was doing all of the operation during the show,†McBride said. “That was really neat to see … the kids taking more ownership of that.â€
Husky Productions also puts on all of the school dances in Oelwein.
McBride said Husky Productions will also take on the prom for West Delaware next spring as their first out of district event.
“It will be kind of neat to get away and do it under people we don’t know,†McBride said. “We are all excited about that and getting prepared.â€
