Multiple area teams went through a whirlwind of weather and games between Thursday and Friday. The North Iowa Cedar League East baseball and softball picture became a little more clearer, but still has a big week ahead.

Oelwein 10, Union Community 2

The Huskies (10-7, 5-2) stayed one game behind Wapsie Valley before Monday’s doubleheader showdown against Wapise Valley with a North Iowa Cedar League East win Thursday in La Porte City.

Oelwein scored five in the fourth to break open a close game and hit .364 (12 for 33) with five walks. The top of the batting order hit 10 for 16, with Jaylynn Craun, Aspen Weir and Macy Westendorf garnering three hits apiece.

Weir and Westendorf scored three runs apiece; Weir drove in three and Grace Gearhart drove in two.

Weir struck out 11 and allowed just three hits in a complete game.

Starmont 14, Central Elkader 2, four innings

Josi Munger struck out six and threw a one-hitter Friday in Arlington.

Cortlyn Grawe went 2 for 2 with two runs and a hit-by-pitch while Benelli Meyers (2 for 3) and Guilia Kruger each drove in two for the Stars (5-13).

Sumner-Fredericksburg-Tripoli 11, Denver 1, four innings

Addison Murray threw a two-hitter and Isabel Bernard, Jade Land and Elle Wedemeier each drove in two runs on Friday in Sumner.

The Cougars (14-8) had Erin Steege (2 for 2) and both Aubree and Jade Land (2 for 3) snag multiple hits.

Starmont swept by Alburnett

The Stars (3-13 Tri-Rivers West) fell, 11-0 and 3-1, to Alburnett on Thursday in Arlington.

Cortlyn Grawe, Guilia Kruger, Josi Munger and Lexi Popham collected Starmont’s four hits across two games.

Grawe drove in one and stole a base while Munger and Popham were hit by pitches and stole a base. Kruger also stole a base.

Munger scattered four hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in the Game 2 loss.

Waverly-Shell Rock 7, SFT 2

The Go-Hawks scored four in the top of the seventh and six in the final two innings to turn a 1-0 lead into a 7-2 final.

Olivia Schoonover hit a two-run homer and went 2 for 3.

Murray pitched five innings and Devyn Freitag pitched the final two.

Baseball

SFT 21, North Fayette Valley 1, four innings

The Cougars (11-1) scored 20 runs in the first inning Friday in Sumner.

SFT collected 14 hits, four hit batters and four walks. Rhys Land (six RBI), Kallen Wilharm (four RBI) and Noah Henderson (2 for 2) hit home runs and both McKoy and Tatum Nuss went 3 for 3.

Starmont-West Central 5, Calamus-Wheatland 0

The Stars (12-2, 5-1) got one game in last week after seeing a TRC West and a nonconference game postponed because of weather and put together an 11th straight win Friday in Calamus.

No statistics were available as of press time.

SWC’s game at Cascade is rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The conference doubleheader against Alburnett is rescheduled for 5 p.m. July 1.

Union Community 7, Oelwein 6

The Huskies clawed back twice but couldn’t get it fully flipped in a NICL East loss Thursday in La Porte City.

Oelwein (2-15, 0-7) drew within 4-3 with a three-run third, then within 7-6 with a three-run sixth.

Landon Rechkemmer went 4 for 4, Landen Whitaker went 2 for 2 with a walk and hit-by-pitch. Cooper Reisner and Bryce Kunkle each drove in two.

Landon Dowd threw a complete game.

Wapsie Valley’s baseball and softball games Friday at Grundy Center were postponed. Oelwein’s baseball game Friday at Denver was cancelled.
