(The Center Square) – U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has renewed a 2017 public health emergency declaration regarding opioid abuse, giving the HHS flexibility to address an epidemic that kills hundreds of Americans per day.
A new analysis exploring opioid fatalities by state highlights which areas are experiencing the steepest declines—and where the epidemic continues to outpace progress. Using the latest data from the CDC, researchers calculated the percentage change in the opioid-related death rate for each state between the 12-month period ending in June 2024 and the 12-month period ending in June 2023.
