MEDIAPOLIS - Looking at the records, it should’ve been an easy playoff win for the 21-1 Mediapolis Bulldogs, but the Benton girls basketball team had other plans.
After the first quarter of play, the Bulldogs held a small 11-10 advantage, but the second quarter saw the Bobcats have one of their best offensive/defensive quarters of the season when they outscored Mediapolis 20-9 to take a 30-20 lead into the halftime break.
The Bulldogs responded in the third quarter with a 17-7 run over the eight minutes to tie the contest up at 37-37 heading into the fourth quarter of play.
Benton was able to outscore Mediapolis 13-10 in the fourth quarter, holding on for the 50-47 upset victory over the Bulldogs, sending the ‘Cats into the Regional finals.
Looking Ahead
The Bobcats will have a really tough test in the Regional finals on Saturday night when they take on top-ranked Mount Vernon.
The Mustangs reached the finals with a 68-23 win over Vinton-Shellsburg in round one and a 52-32 win over Solon Wednesday night.
Mount Vernon has won 21 straight games with their last loss coming on Dec. 3.
The two WaMaC foes faced off in December with the Mustangs beating Benton 62-27.
