INDEPENDENCE – Residents with green Waste Management bins are asked to have all containers be placed out by the curb on Monday, June 30 for Waste Management staff to collect them. Anything that is not picked up will need to be taken to Waste Management at 1100 12th Street NE after Monday.
The City also recently announced the Recycling Center at the Independence Transfer Station (12th Street NE) will close at end of June. New CARDBOARD recycling options for city residents will be available Monday, July 1.
The City stated:
To ensure continued access to cardboard recycling for our residents, the City has arranged with Kluesner’s Sanitation for the placement of two large, dedicated CARDBOARD recycling containers at two convenient locations:
- River’s Edge (206 2nd Avenue SW) — Located in the parking lot on the southwest corner at this time. The location of these bins may be adjusted if needed in the future.
- Former Pool Facility (609 5th St. SE) — Located in the concrete parking area to the east of the building.
It is essential to note that, as these recycling bins are covered under the City’s contract, they are for City residents only.
Service day for the City of Independence is every Tuesday for both trash and recycling.
- Trash: individual households are allowed one trash toter provided by Kluesner Sanitation. Trash should be bagged in garbage bags and placed inside of toter.
- Recycling: Individual households are allowed one recycling toter provided by Kluesner Sanitation. Cardboard should be broken down in 2′ x 2′ square pieces. Metal cans and plastic bottles need to be rinsed. Help reduce waste and improve efficiency by only setting out your recycling when it’s full.
Please have trash and recycling out by 6 a.m. on Tuesdays.

Current Monday pickup: your last pickup by Waste Management will be Monday, June 30. Please use your Waste Management cans for your June 30 pickup. Your first pickup by Kluesner Sanitation will be on Tuesday, July 8.
Current Wednesday pickup: your last pickup by Waste Management was Wednesday, June 25. Your first pickup by Kluesner Sanitation will be on Tuesday, July 1.
