WINTHROP — The Lady Buccaneers picked up their fifth win of the season at home, besting Maquoketa Valley, 3-2 in 10 innings, in Game 2 of a Tri-Rivers West doubleheader Thursday.
Maquoketa Valley won Game 1, 7-1, and put two runs up in the second inning of Game 2. The Wildcats held that lead until the bottom of the fifth.
Buccaneer freshman Charrli Isham got a hit that put the Bucs on the board with two outs, scoring Sammi Isham for a 2-1 deficit.
Maquoketa Valley held on until the seventh inning, when Isham scored for East Buchanan (5-12, 3-11). She reached on a hit-by-pitch, advanced to second and scored on a Wildcat error to tie it up and send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, the Bucs recorded three outs behind the pitching of junior Ava Shannon. Shannon recorded six strikeouts and just two earned runs for the complete game win in Game 2.
Both teams went through a scoreless eighth, and Shannon held the Wildcats in the ninth.
Then the underclassmen stepped up.
Eighth-grader Autumn Kress singled to left field. She moved over on an out, and Connolly — a freshman — hit a grounder over third base and out of reach to send Kress home with the walkoff.
Conolly, Bailie Hookom and Kress each went 2 for 7 in the doubleheader.
The Buccaneers are at Central City for a 5 p.m. conference doubleheader Thursday.
