The West Central Blue Devils began their football season with a loss to Central Elkader Thursday night on the road, 74-28.

The Blue Devils (0-1) started the game with a bang. On their opening possession, Drake Puls caught a 62-yard pass from quarterback Brody Wolff for a touchdown. Puls, one of WC’s six seniors, led the Blue Devils in receiving yards.

West Central added another touchdown on their second drive of the night provided by Milton Cushion. Cushion ended the night with 161-yards rushing on 18 carries, 27-yards receiving, and two touchdowns.

Central Elkader put up two touchdowns of their own in the first quarter, taking the lead at the end of the first, 16-14.

The rest of the night belonged to the Warriors. They dominated in the second quarter, holding the Blue Devils scoreless and putting another 30 points on the board.

A second quarter holding call against West Central nullified a long run that would have put them inside the Warriors’ five-yard line.

The score at halftime was 46-14.

Central Elkader picked apart West Central’s defense throughout the game.

The Warriors outscored the Blue Devils in the third quarter 20-14 to put the game out of reach.

“We struggled to get their offense off the field,†said West Central’s head coach Steve Milder.“We started fast, scoring on our first two drives, but penalties killed us in the second quarter.â€

The Blue Devils (0-1) have another road game on Friday with Don Bosco.
