JOHNSTON - Be among the first to watch the new PBS KIDS program, Weather Hunters, at a special family event. On June 28 at the Maytag Auditorium, Iowa PBS will host premiere screenings of this new animated series at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with fun for the whole family.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on June 28, join Iowa PBS for a special sensory-friendly screening. This relaxed environment is designed for children who may benefit from a more low-key atmosphere. The volume will be softer, the lights dimmed and audience movement is welcome. This screening will offer all the fun of the show with a few thoughtful adjustments, including a more limited capacity.

A second screening of Weather Hunters will begin at 10:30 a.m. This screening will be at full capacity. It's the perfect opportunity for families to come together and enjoy the debut of this funny and engaging new series.

At both showtimes, families will grab a snack and drink before heading into the theater to watch two early episodes on the big screen. After the screening, children will have the opportunity to participate in interactive activities from the Iowa PBS Education team or pick up a grab-and-go activity kit.

Weather Hunters follows the adventures and explorations of weather detective and force of nature Lily Hunter and her family. Lily's dad, Al (voiced by Al Roker), is the fun-loving, beloved host and weathercaster of a long-running TV program. Dot, Lily's multitasking mom, is producer of the family's weathercasts, while Corky, is an 11-year-old budding documentarian who loves capturing exciting weather events on video. Rounding out the Hunter family is Benny, the 5-year-old brother who is always drawing or painting something he has seen during the family's weather adventures.

The Hunters' primary goal is to learn as much as they can about weather to benefit the community and the planet by solving weather mysteries, sharing vital information and encouraging stewardship of the environment. They are continuing in a great family tradition that started with Al Hunter's grandfather, Wallace Reed Hunter (voiced by LeVar Burton), one of the original WWII Tuskegee weathermen who went on to become one of the first African American weather broadcasters. The program will explore kid-relatable, STEM-based themes and activities, showcasing the wonder and science of weather in ways that are accessible to all learners.
