A scattering of city and school board candidates have filed nomination papers to run for office. Election day is Nov. 4. Three Waverly city seats are for grabs—mayor, Ward 1 and Ward 3—as these incumbents each said they are not running. The deadline to file for city and school office is Sept. 18 at 5 p.m.
There are no filing fees in Iowa, per the .
With Waverly City Council, Waverly-Shell Rock Community School Board and Waverly Health Center Board Trustees up for re-election, Waverly residents will have as many as three elections on their ballots.
City and hospital candidates are to file with the Bremer County Auditor’s Office. Information regarding the number of signatures and term length for each office is available on the county elections website, at .
As of Sept. 15, Waverly City Council members Ann L. Rathe, serving at large, and Tim Kangas, representing Ward 5 and serving as mayor pro-tempore, have filed to run again.
Meanwhile, the Waverly mayorship, Ward 1 and Ward 3 seats will be up for grabs, as Mayor Mark Anderson and Ward 1 and 3 council members Brian Birgen and Rodney Drenkow have each said they don’t plan to run.
Mayor Mark Anderson announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election owing to a planned move to be closer to family.
Drenkow in Ward 3 said by phone last week he is not planning to run again.
“It’s been a good experience, but I feel eight years is probably enough. Being on city council is a time-consuming and somewhat stressful endeavor, and it’s time for me to step back from it,†Drenkow said.
In Ward 1, Birgen said he is not seeking re-election to city office and didn’t elaborate.
To run in a specific district requires residence in that district. A map is available on the Waverly city website under Council and online with this story. Ward 3 is basically the central part of town west of the river, and Ward 1 is in southeast town. See .
Janesville city
In Janesville, Mayor David A. Beenblossom has filed to run again.
Janesville has three city commissioners, as their website calls them, all elected at large. Of those, two commissioners, Jeff Conover and Susan L. Stapleton, the mayor pro-tempore, have filed to run again as of Sept. 15.
Plainfield city, public measure
In Plainfield, Mayor Thomas Geise and both council members whose seats are up, Chad Shurtleff and Clyde W. Balvanz, have all filed to run again.
The city of Plainfield is also asking its voters on the November ballot to change the statement of purposes for which Local Option Sales and Service Tax revenue can be used—the revenue purpose statement—to say, “(L.O.S.S.T. revenue can be used) for any lawful purpose, including but not limited to: capital equipment purchases and repairs, street, water, sewer and other capital improvement and maintenance projects.â€
Tripoli city
In Tripoli, the mayor and three council seats will be on the ballot.
Mayor Daniel Kalkbrenner has filed to run again as of Sept. 15.
Mark L. Manson has filed a bid to run for city council as a non-incumbent candidate.
Katie Boldt holds one of the council seats whose term is up and will not be running for another term, she said by email.
Denver city
In Denver, the mayoral position and three council seats are on the ballot this cycle.
Mayor Rod Diercks has filed to run again as of Sept. 15, as have two council members, Sean Hartman and Joel Wikner, who serves as mayor pro-tempore.
Frederika city
In Frederika, the mayor’s position and three at large council seats are on the ballot.
Readlyn city
In Readlyn, the mayor and two at large council seats are on the ballot.
Mayor Dan Wedemeier has filed to run again as of Sept. 15.
Sumner city
In Sumner, three at large council seats are on the ballot.
SCHOOL ELECTIONS
School board candidates must file with their board secretary by Sept. 18.
W-SR Schools
Waverly-Shell Rock has two seats up for election, Director Districts 1 and 4.
In District 1, board member Charlene Wyatt-Sauer has turned in her nomination papers to run again, W-SR Schools Superintendent David Hill said.
Jes Kettleson represents District 4 currently and is not running again this year, “just for personal reasons,†she stated by email.
Eric Eckerman has turned in nomination papers for the Director District 4 seat, Hill reported after press time.
A potential candidate took papers out for Director District 1.
Janesville School
Two at large Janesville School Board seats are on the ballot.
Denver Schools
Two at large Denver School Board seats are up for re-election.
Tripoli Schools
Two at large Tripoli School Board seats are on the ballot.
Wapsie Valley Schools
Wapsie Valley School Board members in Districts 2, 3 and 5 are on the ballot this cycle.
Sumner-Fredericksburg Schools
An at large board member and a Fredericksburg director are on the ballot.
WAVERLY HOSPITAL BOARD
Two Waverly Health Center Hospital Board trustee seats are on the November ballot.
VOTING
You can vote early at the Bremer County Auditor’s Office, 415 E. Bremer Ave., Waverly, IA 50677, starting 20 days before an election, according to the . For most elections, in-person early voting ends at 5 p.m. on the night before the election.
To be sent an absentee ballot by mail, the Auditor’s Office must receive your Absentee Ballot Request form by 5 p.m. on the Monday 15 days before the Election.
