The Waverly-Shell Rock boys golf team defeated Decorah at home on Tuesday, April 29 by a score of 296-317. That score currently ranks as the fourth lowest 18-hole team score across all classes this season.
The Go-Hawks used their home course advantage as well as the beautiful weather to turn in their best 18-hole score of the season. Their previous season best was a 302 in the opening meet of the year.
W-SR Head Coach Austin Cole shared his thoughts on the meet.
“The weather was fantastic and the guys played well. It is encouraging anytime you can break 300 [for an 18-hole team score],†said Cole.
Leading the way individually for the Go-Hawks was Luke Frazell, who also set a new 18-hole season best by shooting a 69. That score was the best of the meet by five strokes, and currently is tied for the 10th best 18-hole round in the state this season.
Finishing behind Frazell and placing second at the meet was Aiden Gielau. Gielau also set a new 18-hole low score of 74, a four stroke improvement of his previous best.
Finishing one stroke behind Gielau and fourth overall at the meet was Hudson Kroymann. Kroymann made it three Go-Hawks who set new 18-hole season bests by finishing with a score of 75. Kroymann’s previous season best was a 76.
Finishing out the Go-Hawks’ team score was Tate Lalk, who finished sixth overall with a score of 78. That score is just one stroke off his previous season best 18-hole score of 77.
Elsewhere for the Go-Hawks, Wesley Hubbard and Preston Baumhover each finished with a score of 87. Both golfers finished tied for 12th at the meet.
It’s been another great season for the returning state runner-up Go-Hawks. The team currently ranks third across all classes in nine-hole average, and 11th in class 3A in 18 hole average.
Cole talked about the season the Go-Hawks have had up to this point.
“I have been proud of how the guys respond after disappointing rounds. They always come back the next day ready to work. It’s also been encouraging to see guys step up when we needed them to. We are a well rounded team as any one of our six golfers can count [towards the team score] on any given day,†Cole said about his team.
Next on the schedule for the Go-Hawks is another dual at New Hampton. The Go-Hawks will look to stay undefeated in duals this year on Thursday, May 1 at 4 p.m.
